Casino
By Danielle, BettingExpert
Based off the book of the same name written by Nicholas Pileggi, Casino reveals the infiltration, fraudulence, and influence of mob culture in Las Vegas. Casino tells the story of Sam 'Ace' Rothstein (Robert DeNiro), a bet-placer and sports gambler for the Midwest mob who is hired by the Kansas City bosses to manage their Tangiers Hotel's casino in Vegas. With a plan to 'skim' the casino's earnings and take a cut of the profits before their revenues are reported, the mob sends Sam to Las Vegas to oversee the operations and improve the success of the casino. The Kansas City bosses also send out Sam's childhood friend, Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci), who's infamously violent temper and aggressive tendencies were sought to protect Sam and the interests of the mob in Vegas. While in Nevada, Sam also begins a relationship with a troubled and attractive hustler, Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone).
After having a child and getting married, Ginger maintains a life of deceit, treachery and infidelity with Sam. She launders money from their mutual bank account, has an affair with both Lester, her old pimp, and Nicky, Sam's friend. Meanwhile, the activities of the casino are being closely watched by the FBI. Nicky, pursuing a series of his own illegal activities, begins his own business in Las Vegas, maintained by stealing jewelry and robbing both stores, and individuals. Nicky's behavior catches the attention of authorities and the media and leads to a series of problems with both the law, the mobsters and Sam.
After the FBI and media gathered enough information, mostly through monitoring Nicky, about the skimming operation run by the Tangiers, the details, accounts and activities of the mob are exposed. Sam's life is threatened by a purposeful car explosion, whom he, as well as the mob bosses, assume was perpetrated by Nicky. Nicky, who is in jail, is bailed out by the bosses, just in order for them to punish him how they deem necessary. Both Nicky and his brother Dominic, who was an accomplice in his Las Vegas business and schemes, are beaten and buried alive. The Casino movie ends with Sam relocated in San Diego, California. He has returned to his original profession of placing bets for the mob. From his adventure in Vegas he lost love, his best friend, and found himself doing the same work that he had been doing before any of this ever happened. He reflects on the way that Las Vegas has changed from a series of family-owned operations to a conglomerate of superficiality and a world that resembles something more like 'Disneyland' than the gambling world it used to represent.
